How Refined Edible Oils Are Produced: From Seed to Kitchen
Refined edible oil looks simple in the bottle, clear, clean and neutral. But getting there takes a carefully controlled journey from seed to kitchen. Understanding that process is the best way to judge quality. Here is how Sule Manufacturers Ltd turns raw seed into refined sunflower, palm and soya oil.
1. Raw material sourcing
Quality oil starts with quality seed. We source sunflower seed through our outgrower programme and partner farmers in West Budama South and across eastern Uganda, selecting clean, mature, well-dried seed with a high oil content. Good sourcing means lower impurities, better yield and a more stable finished oil, which is why traceable, locally-grown raw material matters.
2. Extraction
Once cleaned and conditioned, the seed is pressed to release its oil. Mechanical expeller pressing squeezes oil from the seed under pressure, leaving behind a protein-rich press cake used for animal feed. The oil that comes off the press is crude oil, nutritious but cloudy, with natural gums, free fatty acids and colour pigments that must be removed before it is ready for the table.
3. Refining: degumming, neutralization, bleaching, deodorization
Refining is a four-stage clean-up that turns crude oil into a clear, stable, neutral product:
- Degumming removes phospholipids and gums that would otherwise cloud the oil and shorten its shelf life.
- Neutralization removes free fatty acids, reducing acidity and improving flavour and stability.
- Bleaching passes the oil through natural bleaching earth to remove colour pigments and trace impurities, giving the light, clear appearance consumers expect.
- Deodorization uses steam under vacuum at high temperature to strip out odours and volatile compounds, producing a clean, neutral taste and smell.
4. Quality control
Quality is checked at every stage, not just at the end. We test incoming seed, monitor the refining parameters, and check the finished oil for clarity, colour, acidity, moisture and peroxide value before it is packed. Consistent batch testing is what lets us guarantee the same quality bottle after bottle.
5. Food safety standards
All Sule oils are produced under the supervision of the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) and certified to US EAS 299:2013, with our facility following recognised hygiene and labelling standards. That certification is your assurance that every batch meets Uganda's national food-safety requirements before it leaves the factory.
From a sunflower field in Tororo to a clean, refined bottle in your kitchen, that is the journey behind every drop of Sule oil.
