The Health Benefits of Refined Sunflower, Palm, and Soybean Oils
Edible oils get a lot of conflicting press. Used sensibly, refined sunflower, palm and soybean oils are a valuable part of a balanced diet. Here is what the science actually says, and which common beliefs are myths.
Essential fatty acids
Sunflower and soybean oils are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, including omega-6 (and, in soybean oil, some omega-3), fats the body cannot make on its own and must get from food. These essential fatty acids support cell function, brain health and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Palm oil contributes a balance of saturated and unsaturated fats and is naturally semi-solid, making it useful where stability is needed.
Vitamin E content
Sunflower oil is one of the best dietary sources of vitamin E (tocopherols), a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cells from damage and supports skin and immune health. Palm oil adds vitamin E tocotrienols and beta-carotene (pro-vitamin A). Refining is carefully managed to retain much of this natural nutritional value.
Cholesterol-free by nature
All vegetable oils are naturally cholesterol-free, cholesterol is only found in animal products. Sule refined oils contain no cholesterol and no added trans fats, making them a sensible choice for everyday cooking.
Role in a balanced diet
Fat is an essential macronutrient: it provides energy, carries vitamins A, D, E and K, and adds flavour and satiety to food. The key is moderation and variety, using the right oil for the right job, in sensible quantities, as part of a diet rich in vegetables, whole grains and protein.
Myths and facts
- Myth: "All fats are bad." Fact: Unsaturated fats from vegetable oils are an important part of a healthy diet.
- Myth: "Refined oil has no nutrients." Fact: Refining removes impurities while retaining much of the oil's vitamin E and fatty-acid value.
- Myth: "Vegetable oil contains cholesterol." Fact: Plant oils are naturally cholesterol-free.
Choose UNBS-certified oils, store them away from heat and light, and use the right oil for the cooking method, that is how you get the most from every bottle.
